A little Las Vegas history for you. The Dunes opened on May 23, 1955 and featured 200 hotel rooms, a spacious
casino, and Vera-Ellen in the Showroom. The Ringleader for the grand opening was none other than “Sheik” Frank Sinatra. Las Vegas at this time had more hotel rooms than tourists and The Dunes stayed afloat with a new burlesque show in 1957 called Minsky’s
Follies. Throughout it’s history many people knew that it was controlled by the mafia and in 1993 it was demolished and now the grand Fountains of the Bellagio flow over the same site.
The photograph above was taken in 1973 by my father and my mother is dancing on the left with those kickin’ bell bottoms.. Fuel prices are a stunning 33¢ a gallon.
