20 years ago this week I flew to India for the first time of many trips to the Sub-Continent. This incredible mind opening backpacking adventure lasted almost 5 months in this great country, including a month in Sri Lanka. I took the above photograph in the shore temple city of Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. Along with its great sculptures of Pancha Ratha, Mahabalipuram still retained an air of a stone carving industry with artisans carving and chipping away at limestone blocks to produce the many deities within the Hindu religion. The picture above was taken with Agfa Scala slide film. I wish I had color film in my camera at this moment because the colors of the monkey’s garb was incredible but I had to grab this shot. It’s an amazing photograph because the monkey is standing very upright, almost like a Homo Erectus. Evolution in front of your eyes. I have only printed this photograph once for a portfolio but I have some new ideas for a limited series hand printing.
